it's somewhat correct. kinda like a good skier is harder to learn snowboard. (sideway maneuver instead of front)

although a diver doesnt need to know how to swim, but the you still need to know a bit of basic maneuver skills to move around when underwater.

but an experienced swimmer may find it a bit difficult to adjust in the beginning. because most swimmers tend to swim upward instead of horizontally while underwater. so it's harder to maintain your depth level...

but it's not a big deal. just remain calm underwater and you'll be fine, regardless you're a swimmer or not.

that's only my experience, we'll see what vicky has to say...

I'm not an expert here, but you're right Freddie. You need not be a swimmer to dive, however you must still learn the basic kicks and positioning of your body, or else you'll end up looking like giant Sea Horse.
Reverend
Re "diving" : we're talking about scuba diving/underwater exploration, right? Not just jump fr platform, right?

I'd advise against diving w/o knowing how to swim. I doubt many would go underwater exploration alone, usually go with friend(s). If there's trouble for your friend, you better know how to swim to potentially save his/her life. May even save your ownself.
freddie
yup. scuba dive, not sky dive nor platform dive. laugh.gif

that's what we call a dive-buddy. always scuba-dive in pair...

i like vicky's "giant sea horse" statement. rolf.gif
vy90

haha.. maybe we can organize a trip for diving.. anyone join?

As Freddie said, you need a buddy to dive with, it is a diving rule. And when there's trouble, knowing how to swim won't save anyone, you must know what is to be done. All these are thought and there's also a theory & practical exam which you've to pass in order to get your license.
And FYI, with the Buoyancy Control Device (the vest which divers wear), assists you to control your buoyancy, therefore you shouldn't sink once you inflat it.
freddie
and you shoot up like a rocket if you inflat it too fast... and that, is very dangerous.

rules of thumb, keep calm.

Was talking to Freddie about Diving yesterday after badminton and manage to search this link... Not sure if I want to start a new topic called diving instead of swimming... Just wanted to find out how many divers is in the house...

Mostly unrecorded (in Tioman) as I dive around 2-3 meters of water at the Tekek rivermouth (inspection/taking pictures of river/sea wall - I have construction work there)

Same here, might / might not need refresher course. Last dive was >3 yrs ago. Log book is around but didn't log few dives dy. Card is definitely with me.
However my reg. definitely need servicing.

If you guys can arrange for diving instructions and the necessary certification, i am sure members will be interested. For one, I'd be interested.

BTW, hotman, i have renamed the post to include your topic. wink.gif

Dun really think you need refresher course as after the 1st or 2nd dive everything will come back thumbsup.gif ...

Thanks RempitGurl for changing the topic thumbsup.gif ... Most of the dive shops do provide such crash course lessons/certifications... I personally feel that it is better to understand diving before you actually do it in open waters (as in the sea)... Do we have a certified dive master/instructor in the house?? If you're interested maybe you can come to one of the TT's and I can lend you the diving book which most of us would have gone thru before taking the exam and getting our license..

I wonder how many members are divers? I have a close friend who is a certified Rescue Diver and would be able to give us advise on diving, including diving trips, diving stuff, getting license, etc.

I am in the midst of planning for a diving trip for Open Water License somewhere in April 09, location is Lembeh Straits, Manado, South Sulawesi (tentatively). There are about 5 of us now, including myself. Let me know if you are interested.

Tht's why I said might or might not... biggrin.gif Coz my last dive was >2yrs gap between the one before. No prob. Only the 1st dive can't use small tank and need more weighs. 2nd dive already back to small tank and reduced weighs.

My fren is an Instructor. If there's a list of Open Water students, it'll be good, can all go for the class and Open Water Theory & Pratical together.

I'm only an AWD.

Am an open water diver and was certified in 1996.

Last dive was in 1998.

I guess 10 years is probably too long a break !

Keep us posted on next dive trip and if I can break away from the work schedule, will most certainly try to join the group.
