i've had both, now on 1.4. imo i think it depends on one's budget. the 1.8 is definitely the most value for money (bang for the buck) but the 1.4 is definitely superior - better build, metal mount, 8 bladed diaphram vs 5 in the 1.8. it also has usm for quieter faster focus. but you pay for all the for 1k+ more. if u r serious about the hobby then just get the 1.4. you can still use it next time if you decide to go 5d or 1d. :)

eh jgn panggil cam tu. noob je haha. if free i will take the 35mm ofc. u r comparing rm 300 lens to rm1000 or so lens. but if i were to spend 1K or so i might as well go for the 50mm f1.4 (got usm and 8 blades which the 35 doesnt have) then by adding a few hundred. the 50 1.8 is around rm 300 right.. im assuming new prices. if 2nd hand then adjust accordingly la.

ask urself what do u want to use the lens for. 35 is fairly wide (not too much though on a crop factor). if you want to take portraits i still think the 50mm is a better focal range.

other questions is what do u want to end up with (your lenses). you have a 18-135 right although the aperture is smaller. what pics do u wanna take. if scenery better save for an ultra wide like 10-22mm which u do not have. if portrait then go for 50 1.8 or 1.4.

i guess the answer is what type of photo you wanna take and... go thru all the photos you took before, what focal range do u shoot most often? :)

i just bought a new 50mm 1.8... i love it. hehehe

Nick, Jag:

Thanks for all the advice. I just bought 500D 18-55mm kit (errrr.. not just, but many many weeks ago). Really enjoying it until last week - just got into me that I need a bigger lens. (Cannot tahan la cannot zoom further!!! Besides, kinda poisoned myself when seeing other guys with "bigger" and "longer" lens. geek.gif

So I went on and bought a brand-new 18-200mm f3.5-6.5 OS Sigma lens. I want this type of lens as it has dual purpose, standard size and zoom size... Cost me Rm1600. The new Canon with similar spec is much costlier = RM2800. The second-hand Canon similar spec = RM1800. I took Sigma as it is brand new and got 2-yr warranty, as opposed to only 3-mths for second-hand one. So far so good!
WhiteSurfer
Syah.....u bought the 500D or 550D ? If 500D then it must be the cost factor because 550D is the replacement/superior model.

An 18-200mm zoom lens is what I would consider a tourist lens biggrin.gif since this lens covers almost all one would need during a holiday. Myself also considering this type of lens but as of now still dreaming.

So now your kit lens is redundant oredi lorr.....might as well sell off cheap cheap and recover some money to buy more stuffs

Bro White ---> Spot on! I put two and two together and it doesn't add up. I figured I don't need those extra features 550D has to offer: (1) slightly larger MP - it's not like I wanna print out big banner or something, the biggest probably A3 size potrait or wall photo, (2) HD quality video - don't need high quality, so as long I shoot my wife+kids don't turn out to be nenek kebayan+dwarfts, I'm okay with it. Ha ha.)

You're right again, bro. I thought of 70-300mm, but then again, it'll become too heavy to get around and if I want to shoot normal-sized photo, need to change lens. And also 300mm is extreme - I don't wish to shoot birds, flying insects or some naked women on the beach. Gotta sit back, have a smoke and process in your head what you need, not what you want. Ha ha.

My 18-55mm lens kit I traded in. Very cheap! It's like the price of Hoya 72-D lens filter only! Don't wanna think about the loss too much.... Ha ha.
fick
u can sell 18-55 around RM300 and can get a used canon 18-200 around rm1600. if lucky can get few weeks or months old item, warranty more than 2 years. i spend much time surveying on LYN. hahahaha...
how's your sigma??? share some photo la. i'm noob. still learning how to use a dslr

Ha ha. I'm not so lucky - (1) sold for RM150, (2) got canon 18-200 second, RM1800, but only 3-mth shop warranty.

Sigma just weeks old. Tgh menyusu lagi.. ha ha ha. Yet to explore all. But photos taken look good. I'm also newb. My first DSLR. Gotta learn a lot from you guys... smile.gif
Nick277
the 18-200 ws selling about rm 1400 or so lefover 2 years warranty. earlier batch of 500d had a kit with it and many sold with 1+2 years warranty probably left 2-2.5 years. but anyway u already bought the sigma. have fun!

no wonder its much cheaper than other brands
WhiteSurfer
yup.....all manual focus but landscape photography using the 14mm should not be a problem at all. Just set to somewhere near infinity with f11 or above, everything should be in focus biggrin.gif

But then again if top up a bit more can buy the Tokina 12-24mm or tambah sikit lagi can go for the better 11-16mm....hehehe. This hobby is d*mn expensive lerrrr biggrin.gif

expensive is the keyword. that's why i only use 100d and 18-135 + 50mm 1.8. I'm still learning process. I'll buy 500d or 550d or maybe 60d when i get better with dslr. this hobby even more poisonous than modify car...

the crop factor is body dependent, not the lens. in the old days during film camera time the widely used film format was 35mm (the rectangle size of the film exposure was 35mm). it has become a standard. when digital came, the sensors designed were mostly not 35mm in size.

See here for sensor sizes
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...SensorSizes.svg

Look at the 3rd row 1st from left - APS-C Canon. The size of the grey area is smaller than the outer blue box. The grey area is the size of the Canon APS-C sensor (500D, 550D, 60D, 7D, etc) the blue area is the size of a full frame (FF) dslr (5D series)

Now lenses marked "EF" were made for FF cameras. so the lens project/bends the light and fills up the full 35mm film/sensor. So what happens with smaller sensor like APS-C? The outer area cannot be seen and is not recorded. The factor for Canon is 1.6 as in... if on a FF camera you are using 10mm view, to get the exact same view on a crop factor body you need to use a 16mm (10 x 1.6)

What this means is that... a 200m zoom lens on a crop factor body appears too zoom further than a 200mm on a FF body. Also a 17mm lens on a FF appear much wider than the 17mm on a crop factor body.

EF-s lenses were made specifically for crop factor bodies and cannot be used on a FF body. You cannot mount it.

Hope this helps :)

Nick-san. thank you for your long explanation. i appreciate that. from what u said above, EF lens cant use to it full ability if i'm using non-FF body. and EF-S lens on non-FF body got no crop factor.correct me if i'm wrong... which also mean, my cheap 1000d better use EF-S lens... correct???

yes EF lens can' use the full but most lenses have vignetting or soft focus on the outer edge so it's actually a good thing in some cases, you only use the best parts of the lens. most high end lenses are EF btw, and many use it on crop body. no issue with it actually. you just get a different view angle.

EF-S was designed for crop factor body so everything goes into the sensor. but because of this it cannot be mounted on a full frame body.

fick
yes boss. i do know it is not a prob to use EF on non-FF body. but i'll lose a lil' bit angle of view. give me your personal recommendation. is it wise to get a 35mm f2 for my 1000d??? i already have a 50mm 1.8. i'm happy with it but the angle of view is narrow. cant complain much since it's a cheap lens after all. hehehehe...

i think this is a very hard question to answer. depends what photos you wanna take. the 50mm is great for portraits half body or even full body just walk two steps back n forth. i don't have the 35mm as to me it's neither here nor there. bukan sini bukan sana haha. not wide enough not long enough... i like ultra wide in which case i use a 17mm (about 11mm if crop factor) for landscape, scenery and general shots. if i'm shooting portrait then i either use a 50mm or a 70-200mm (you get better bokeh when you zoom in as well as wide aperture).

in your case you have a 50mm for portraits and such. if you go 35mm it doesnt get any much wider (a little bit la). as i said neither here nor there macam separuh jalan. if you want to go wide go for the 10mm range. you can get a wide shot like the shot on the main LGTC page of our last annual gathering. that was shot at 17mm (11mm for crop factor).

but these r my personal opinion la. others may view differently. i guess it depend on what kind of photos you like to take... :)

5DmarkII has Full Frame sensor which is 7D, 600D, 550D, 500D has 1.6X crop sensor.
If you're using 50mm lens it's really suitable with Full Frame camera.
So in that case, because of I'm using it for video purposes, 30mm is just nice for me to get the result slightly the same as Full Frame camera.

By the way, I'm using Magic Lantern firmware hack on my 550D (Extremely Dangerous method, can brick your camera too) to get the same exact footage same as 5DmarkII 24p native. Why I hacked my firmware? Simple, I can't afford 5DmarkII...yet!
As long as you're using Final Cut Studio to edit your footages, you'll get stunning end product like 5DmarkII camera.

Well, above of all, it's not the camera that makes your picture look good, but it is you and your judgment.
