So far this is my understanding of the 2 brand of camera which may guide you to which to purchase so you don have to upgrade later

Canon arrangement of level for its camera
1000D - super entry level (noob :D)
350/400/450D - Entry/Amateur Level
30/40/50D - Intermediate Level
1 / any single digit - Pro Level

Nikon,
D40/40x/60 - Entry Level
D70/D80/D90 - Amateur/Intermediate
D200/300/700 (full frame) - Intermediate/Advance Intermediate
D single digit - Pro level

Actually you can never go wrong with Nikon or Canon.

But its true that both maker have its advantage/disadvantage.

To make it simple : If you want to shoot at people -ala paparazzi- better go for Nikon.
( they have much more advance calculation in focusing speed )

: If you want to shoot at scenery, macro etc better go for Canon
( Color reproduction and lenses quality is the best )

But since I'm working with Canon, my opinion can biased. heheheh
I myself using EOS 1V and EOS 40D...actually its my company one.
Never buy one...just "borrow".

I strongly suggest you pick the 450D...the 1000D have some issue...
like cannot zoom during picture viewing on LCD...i think

1000D can zoom during picture viewing leh... buy 2nd hand... I found one 2009 450D with kit... onli RM2100

Thank you bro. Managed to check out the Sony Alpha 300 as well...nice specs and the LiveView is different from those on 1000D. And the LCD can be tilted as well They offer 2 different packages and the price is def cheaper than C & N, now in dilemma . Maybe I will just wait and see.....

Yesterday finally bought Canon 1000D kit...but second hand la, the set was bought in Feb 2009 and shuttercount is 2200 only. Bought for RM1300 at Cash Converter Ampang. OK la save about 700 bucks I guess

no a bad deal u got there.... to me 50mm F1.8 is a good buy. and if u dun mind 2nd hand, Ive seen EFS55-200 at less than RM500. Nissin is a quite commonly used 3rd party flash.

I think to start me off, im going to get the Olympus SP-565UZ 10MP 20x. I want to be able to take amzing car pics. I can get it for 250 usd shipped.

Since DSLR is getting cheaper might as well get a decent DSLR than those Prosumer camera.
For long run DSLR is worthy with better picture quality, changeble lenses and more controls.

Consumer DSLR options:
Canon 1000D, 500D
Nikon D5000

Getting Sony will end up spending more on lenses and accessories. Olympus is using the unusual 4:3 format.
The rest can forget it coz only big companies hv better R&D.

for 2k, I would suggest d60.. but that depends on you, any friend using DSLR? I would be much easier to have a same brand with ur fellow photographer. easy to learn & borrow2 lense..

I was in same situation like you irieN....looking for budget/entry DSLR two months ago. Tested Canon 1000D, Nikon D60 and Sony Alpha and Minolta. Then survey the secondhand market for good bargains and found one unit at Cash Converter, a Canon 1000D kit for RM1300 ( market price for new ard 2K ) with just 2300 shutter count and 8 months warranty still. Quickly grab and never looked back...next week will be buying 55-250 lens and flash

I have seen photographers with lousy looking photos taken with RM4-6k cameras and beautiful photos taken with entry DSLR.....it the person behind the camera that matters

nightwatchmen advise is spot on.....it really helps if you have friends on Canon/Nikon camp since are both good brands, then can easily swap/lend accessories.

Nikon D40 tu old model oredi kot cos been replaced by D60 as base Nikon model. And I think Sony have just released some newer base models A330 or something.

As for my equipment...now sudah increase with additional Canon 55-250 mm, Canon 50mm, Nissin flash and tripod chikai At end of day its still the person behind the camera thats important. Jom join the Canon camp bro.

he uses D60 only for the photography job...more on wedding and sometimes Indon/Bangla nak buat pass kerja...

Bought myself D90 from Electronic Festival at Mid Valley today. Got tripod and shoulder bag as gift. The battery need to charge for 8 hours so got no time to play with it yet. However, i am very happy just to hold it. Need to study more how to use the camera.. hehehe.. yeahhh i am so happy!
