as far as i know canon cameras are more expensive compared to nikons one at the same range but their accessories (flash, lens, etc.) apparently are much cheaper...

anyway im not a pro, just an amatuer tongue.gif

need pros like desmond, bunnie, king, nits, infinitygt to provide indetails review...haha

D60 of course... can check out nikonian webpage for courses too...

Canon have a very very beginer entry DSLR know as 1000D.

Cost around 2K with kit lens. This lower range than Canon 450D or Nikon D60 (Not worth getting as it's only mega pixel upgrade of D40 or D40x).

Canon now has few range of lens. The kit lens came with the body are EF-S range (light weight plastic lens cheap lens - latest lens for canon) and so on.. to the expensive (you can see in canon web site)

Nikon has thier only 1 type lens nikkor lens. They never categorise it as Canon cheap to expensive lens.

Either canon or nikon, both these brand has strong 3rd parties lens support.

Got extra cash, I will ask you to get Canon 50D (latest canon not in Malaysia yet) or Nikon D90 (latest nikon dslr) and Nikon is all the while known for thier perfect White Balance.

As for Canon, they are know fro thier L Lens (SUper duper sharp, fast and expensive lens)

Before getting a dslr, please ask ur self, what you goin to do with ur dlsr? for me.. well you can click the link under my beagle :D
JohnsonLam
by the way.. the new Nikon D90 is out.. features are really GREAT !!! and quite affordable (Compare to Canon)... made to match/win the new Canon 50D...

I am a Canon supporter.. so.. not much comment on D90.. I have lots of canon bodies. And even from compact point and shoot. The arguement between Canon and Nikon is always hot and each of them have their own pros and cons.. (Just like Civic and Lancer)

At the end, depends on what you prefer.. and what is your usage...

If you are shooting more of Indoors, Models, People... I personally felt Nikons are superior (Coming from a Canon-guy, these are strong words)

But if you are taking more of Outdoor, Bright, well lited lights, Green stuff, Birds.. sports... Usually, you notice in Football, F1 ... they go for Canon..

--

If you are looking for both Entry level SLR and your concern is PRICE.... Then, it really narrow down to Nikon.. these days.. they price is soooo compatative... I am thinking of getting one as a backup / learning camera too.. hehehe

Anyway.. here is a very good site for you to look at..
http://dpreview.com/

Put the models you are interested SIDE by SIDE : http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp
and.. make your decisions there..

It is hard to buy a Lancer talking to a Honda fanatic.. or Buying a Civic talking to a Mitsubishi Lover... :P

GOOD LUCK !! (Sorry for not helping much).. Unless, you are confirmed going for a Canon.. then look me up.. hahahaha

what about olympus.. my friend said olympus as good as the rest and the accessories is cheaper.. true ka??
terion
olympus not sure about their DSLRs la but last time when i was scouting for my first digicam, wanted to get Olympus but the shop owner told me to get Canon.

Not only was it cheaper but the image quality was much better then the higher megapixel and more expensive Olympus...

Olympus - Old titan in new dslr market
Lens - New lens are limited to 3-5 (very new!!), Old lens non motorised manually focus (slr lens)
Third party - Nil to date
Price - Cheap
Package - came with 2 lens (One is wide , one is tele)
Picture - High mega pixel, new picture engine, picture not vivid enough

My verdict - don get it. You get this, might as well get a sony (at least with 3rd party lens).

PS :~ I'm an EOS guy as well :D

Actually if can strech a bit on your budget to get a more "proper" one, why not ?
DSLR unlike Lancer which you can mod little by little to make it perform better. So once you get it, you have to live with it. Price difference between each model/brand usually not much, RM500 or less.

Buy something you like is the most important. There are some after buying DSLR for a few days already thinking to upgrade (regret not getting the one he really reasonably prefer)

I was also looking for an D-SLR and was comparing these:-
1. Nikon D60
2. Canon 450D, and
3. Sony Alpha 300.

Was settled with Sony A300, i know a lot of bros here may not agree but am really impressed with the feature especially the live view's speed, almost immediate compared with Canon 450D. on top of the common specs among these SLRs, with the addition live view feature helps in many great angle photo shooting for me... just gotten this for 2 weeks and am really happy with it biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Liveview to me is not important. If get a DSLR as a live view camera why not just opt for prosumer compact camera confused.gif

Anyway word of advise. Live view ois meant for tripod mode usage where certain angle, u as a photograher cannot bend or post to suite the condition to take the picture and it is NOT meant for each time shooting like compact camera. Open up shutter curtain widely before capturing will tend to invite dust onto the mirror.

Bad sadly speaking (not to criticize) since ur taking picture thru live view instead of the view finder by the eye. I will say... you had wasted the full potention of the camera dry.gif

No offend by you, bro, everyone is entitled to his own opinion... I've wiki/google before buying and looks like comments on life view will be a "must have" by many professional photographers in their next toy...

Of cause i'm aware of the use of life view is not needed at all time, but believe me, from the two weeks that i have with it, i really appreciate the "have" of it thumbsup.gif it's not easy to share the experience in words.. and it is just an additional feature on the D-SLR, which is exactly why i buy one on top of the compact camera that i already have.

Not sure about your comments on inviting dust thought...

btw, gotten a free original sony tripod among the other free gifts too happy.gif

It would serve bro Davechew's initial objective of PLC and under 2k.. attached is a sample photo taken about 3 hours ago.
terion
i agree with beeman too... just take this scenario:

i used to use my D40 to take photos of events and when the photo opportunity arrives, lots of photographers will rush in front and basically u can't get a good view if ur trying to look through the view finder to take a shot... so i tend to just point it from as high angle as possible and try to take a shot... which almost every time miss the target...

but imagine with live view u can do the same and actually get what u want...

and since live view is essentially the same as looking through the view finder, y do u say it has wasted its potential?

Yes a must but I did tell u earlier, that the main purpose of live view is for tripod usage. laugh.gif

Well if you have more that 1 lens, you wil opt to change lens. More or less while changing, dust tend to be invited in. Hence this is where the dust comes in and the more u open up the shutter curtain the more changes the dust hits ur mirror. Get a blower and blow it frequently. That y some people tend to have dust stict to mirror or onto the glass lens.

Tripod a must get Item laugh.gif Hmmm err.. better change to heavier tripod. Manfratto 190X series with ball head is selling at 5xx now. Don't think your free tripod can withstand the camera weight if you are using larger or longer lens or after battery grip is added on later. biggrin.gif

My point here is just saying that using just live view all the time is like using a compact camera. laugh.gif

The best is still your very own self to try it out one by one and the one which you feel comfortable and ease of use will be the one for you. Every DSLR will have their own advantages and disadvantages. On top of that there will be brand supporters some more. If you ask the canon supporters for camera advise what do you think he/she will poison you into? I myself and Justin is using olympus and I found that it is great for me. If you wanna compare, those National Geography photographers are using olympus as well. How 'Pro' you want to be? Just get one you are happy with it and within your budget. biggrin.gif

obviously u haven't seen the latest sony alpha..

medowance
Anyway, Canon 1000D @ 19xx now, Nikon D60 @ 21xx.

But seriously don get your camera from chain link shop coz... they will not lower thier price and selling at recommended retail rate. Will only give you some printing voucher (you print out side much cheaper than chainlink shops), cheap tripod, 3rd parties camera sling bag or free ugrade or memory card (warning to those noobs, sometimes the distributor has already allocated the FOC memory card with that package so do check with other shops what they giving before purchasing. Don't pay extra and get BS by the sales).

Check out the shops stated in photomalaysia, photokaki and shutterasia for recommended and reliable shops to get the camera.
beeman
The objective of buying a SLR is also to explore the usage of different lens and their effect in shootings. dust has been one of the concerns while changing the lens. therefore there are some D-SLR in the market which has the little additional "anti-dust" feature. although i also have my reservation on the effectiveness of this feature, buy hey, it's good to have right?

Yes, there are a lot of shops there offering free gifts which are at a slightly cheaper cost to them. We consumers have every right to ask before the purchase. Quite lucky for me to be given VCT-R640 original sony tripod, which is tested by me for the weight. Sony Alpha carrying bag and also Sony CF card and original Sony replacement battery. i made my purchase in KL, but for better assurance, please check with dealers in Changi Airport if you happen to go there, which also offer similar thingy and almost the same price after the currency converted.

I agree with selecting a camera is like selecting a handphone, where everybody has his/her own preferences. well, since bro davechew was asking about PLC, just to share my recent experience. not a sales man in sony ya.. happy.gif

Cheers all biggrin.gif

Didn't know our club also have so many photographers. Can someone explain a bit on "noises"?
Canon Vs. Nikon. Vs. Sony. Vs. Olympus. If shoot indoor with higher ISO, which one is better?
I found that noise is very annoying... it ruins good pictures...

Can read at wikipedia about digital noise. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_noise

Bout the comparison, had a read at www.dpreview.com. All comparison can be found there depends on which model. Not Brand

What your friend told you is partly true in a sense; provided you stay with a single brand.

You can start to opt with cheaper body and get a good lens then upgrade for better body (provided you had master the 1st body laugh.gif ).

Between D80 and D200; if cash is not the problem, then I suggest you take up D200 straight away and master these further advance dslr. You will tend to get frustrated with those entry or intermediate range for function which is lack of...so up to max if cash no problem for you. (beware D200 weight a brick.. so built those arm musscle before playing it biggrin.gif )

Lens wise... anybrand you use will be a dilemma.. Hahahahahahaha

Thanks Bro Medowance. Saw your ad there as well. This brand thingy is really like toyota and honda forever difficult to talk about. Personally i have some preference for Nikon..hehe. Otherwise will actually pm you for a good price ;)

I am very tempted with the D200 posted. Think about it, D200 + 18-200 vr ~ RM5k...hehe

Its like giving me an Evo VIII when i just got my driving licence. Can i take it. Sh*t.

Go for D90, the new sensor have better ISO control (From D300)

I'm no expert... but Alpha350's specs are almost similar to D80... D90 is a new cam, quite a significant upgrade from a 2-yr-old D80...
personally, I would go for D80 w/o kit lens & match it with a VR lens...
if u google more, the price of D90 with kit lens is RM4K+, depends on ur nego power..

For entry level camera which you want hassle free since you have low budgeted cash then I suggest you to get the canon 1000D or 450D (prefer due to more focussing and feature choice) as the lens and body come with built-in motor.

D40 or D60 (DX base body) you will have problem sorting out 2nd hand lens and 3rd party lens as you need get lens with motor as the body is not motorised. So old good lens for nikon will not be useable in DX body unless you can manual focus ur shooting :D

hmm...very good point there bro as regards the motorised lens. For similar focal lens ranges, lets say 55-150mm, would the price be much different between them ( exclude 3rd party )

450D might be pushing the budget oredi but hmmm.....must stop modding my GT biggrin.gif
