Full Version: Please Lodge A Police Report If Your Car Number Plate Has Been Stolen
Lancerzone Forums - Lancer Grand Touring Club Malaysia > General > Paddock Area

If you discover that your car number plate has been stolen, please walk, no, please RUN to the nearest police station to lodge a police report.

This happened to my colleague’s younger brother a few years ago. He parked his car at the LRT station. When he came back, he discovered that his car number plate has been stolen. So he lodged a police report because he heard from someone that he should do it.

That night, he returned home to his condominium after attending a dinner. At the parking lot of the condominium, he was ambushed and arrested by a police party. He kept asking why he was being arrested. They searched his car, particularly his car boot. They didn’t find anything.

So, they took him up to his condominium unit. There they saw his wife, children and in-laws in the condominium. They softened a bit and informed him that a car bearing his car number plate was involved in an armed robbery that day and they were tracking the robbers. So they thought he was one of the armed robbers. He showed them the police report that he lodged. They praised him and released him on the spot. Otherwise I guess he would have been brought back to the police lock up to be remanded for a few days pending investigation.

So, please do the same. I hope this info helps.

P/S: Please trust me. The above is a true story. I have better things to do with my life than to create stories like this.

tq for the advice bro.

if they copy your car plate number without stealing it and later commit crime...then it is quite difficult to make police report...just ask the lawyer abt this...RG you're needed here...lalalalala...the police should check with RTD first abt the type of car and other stuff...if not they can not simply raid one house...we can sue them for this...saman malu can or not RG?

Last time my friend's Waja number plate was "lost" (actually stolen). Her collegue advice her to lodge a report at police station. Luckily she did.

The next day, police called her up to go to police station for questions. The police told her someone used her number plate on a Waja (same color as hers) to rob a lady at 3am. The lady spotted the car plate and driver (a man).

Without lodging the report, it could be more troubles to explain to the police.

the police might chase & shoot you to kill.. they might thought you are very dangerous & armed..
while they have laws to cover their own ass on the mistake. Since we didn't do the police report, we are at the risk & liable for their action. blink.gif

Very true bro. I also thought about that but I could not come up with a reasonable explanation except that maybe it was a rushed criminal job and they don't have time to make duplicate number plates....Then again if I really know the answer, this means I have the potential to pursue a criminal career... laugh.gif

i have several questions about the "situations" posted:

(a) did they steal front n back no. plates?
(b) as bro onslaught asked, why steal when u can buy easily? and isn't it risky to steal a no. plate 2 commit a crime?
© criminals keep spare plates in the boot of their cars...they are like the batteries : "ever ready"...
(d) robbery is a very serious criminal offence punishable with up to 14 years in prison n if it is classified as robbery with voluntarily causing hurt, u can even be jailed up to 20 years on top of whipping. So, if ur car no. plate was stolen to commit a robbery, do u think the police will politely wait for u @ your condo? Wouldn't they have set up road blocks much less put an APB out? p/s: how come the police so sure u come back to condo AFTER committing robbery?? Don't criminals go and lie low first??
© on police calling u up to go to police station - don''t u think u will ask police why u r being called to go police station in the first place? if u have committed offence/crime, police shud come n get u, not u go to police...so, if u committed no offence/crime, why do u need to go to police station?? and how the heck did the police connect the car no. plate with your phone number anyway???

not trying to be a smart aleck here, but ...

BTW, to bro onslaught - yes, u can saman malu the police on top of saman for aggravated emotional distress. Not only u can saman the police, but the government as well.

Wah, so many questions, how to answer ah [scratching head]. I don't think my colleague made up this story. I know her quite well. She has a family of her own. She has been working in my company for a number of years and is still my colleague until today. I don't know the full details but I can only relate the true story here.

It is different if I heard this story from my friend after a few drinks in the pub. Then it is beer talk biggrin.gif

Tq for the info bro & also to RG for the explanation

Some answers that I can think of...

(a) did they steal front n back no. plates?.....
**They steal the back plate, so that victim can spot the number to be used on their car. Divert fault to ori owner.

(b) as bro onslaught asked, why steal when u can buy easily?....
not trying to be a smart aleck here, but ...
**They normally steal the regulars who park around the area (They won't steal a Melaka plate and do robbery/snatching in KL). Buy number plate cost RM60/pair. Some of them are snatch theft, not big robbers. Budget problem la to buy number plate :)

my Waja number plate has never been stolen, but this incident happen to me before. sometime 2 years ago, at middle of the night police came knocking at my father's house in malacca asking about me. my driver license was registered using my parent address. my father called me and informed me what happen. the next day I was informed to report to balai polis kampung subang. there a team from sungai siput were waiting to interrogate me. obviously a proton waja using my plate number was used during armed robbery at one handphone shop in sungai siput. I spend the whole day there tried to explain thing to the police, together with my wife because my wife was using the car. lucky they believed us, if not maybe have to spend time in police lock up.

Thank you everyone for your thumbs up for this topic.

There is a sense of urgency for me to post this topic since Chinese New Year is around the corner.

But why is CNY relevant? This is because under the law, an arrested person has a right to be produced before a magistrate without unnecessary delay and in any event, not to be detained beyond 24 hours without a remand order being obtained from the magistrate.

But what happens if a person is arrested on the eve of a weekend or public holiday? Under the OLD SYSTEM, the police will only produce an arrested person in court on the following Monday morning to obtain a remand order.

For e.g, this year, CNY falls on 26th and 27th January 2009 (i.e. Monday and Tuesday). Therefore under the OLD SYSTEM, anyone arrested by the police for any suspected crime next Friday, i.e. 23rd January 2009, will get 4 ADDITIONAL DAYS FREE food and lodging at the police lock-up, courtesy of the police.

Why? Because the courts are closed from 24th to 27th January 2009 for the holidays. Therefore, any arrested person can only be produced at the magistrate court by the police on 28th January 2009 (i.e. Wednesday) to obtain a remand order.

However, nowadays I believe the courts and police have adopted a NEW SYSTEM. Under this new system, as far as weekends and public holidays are concerned, remand proceedings are conducted by magistrates at specific police stations on a rotation basis. So, we don’t get any free additional food and lodging at the police lock-up anymore. 2095_wailing.gif

Nonetheless, I will not advise anyone to try and test this new system to see if it works. laugh.gif

So, stay safe everyone during the CNY holidays. thumbsup.gif

P/S : Sorry, is this OT already?

Last time we have member Vomix that drove his Lancer without any number plate... he just put his number plate inside his car and if he got stopped by police, he'll say his number plate just fell off... dunno if he's still doing that or not :)

He thinks number plates spoil the look of a car IIRC. I agree with him :) He also did this with his tricked-out Waja.
