Here€™s something to look forward to in the D-segment sedan market here in Malaysia. Hyundai has facelifted its Hyundai Sonata and it€™s only a matter of time before we receive a similiar update here in Malaysia.

The most obvious changes are the new bumper and grille designs, but the most impressive feature of the facelift is the new second generation Theta engine under the hood. This new Theta engine brings up the 2.0 liter€™s power from 145 PS up to 158 PS, and the 2.4 liter€™s power from 161 PS up to 171 PS. The 2.0 liter engine horsepower figures beat the figures produced by the Civic 2.0S and the Lancer 2.0 GT€™s engines.

Interestingly, the Lancer 2.0 GT€™s 4B11 GEMA engine and the Hyundai-Kia Theta engine both share the same 86mm x 86mm €œsquare€ bore and stroke - the fruits of the GEMA engine project with different head configuration perhaps?

This new Theta II engine will also likely find its way into the Kia Optima when it is facelifted, further enhancing the car€™s already very appealing specs package.

Different head? Wonder what Hyundai/Kia did to the head to improve the power? and does that sacrifice the engine's FC?

Not sure about the real engine used but GEMA (Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance) is a JV of Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyundai Motor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Engine...turing_Alliance

Kia's only has 2, "TWO" ecu programs, hot and cold. Their hot program is not 'optimised' for Malaysia's climate, hence the higher FC. Can be tuned with amazing power gains and FC improvements. Check out the Kia clubs.

4B1 is Mitsubishi own design though based on world engine concept by GEMA.
"Although the basic designs of the various engines are the same, their exact specifications are individually tailored for each partner. The cylinder block and other basic structural parts of the engine were jointly developed by the GEMA companies, but the intake and exhaust manifolds, the cylinder head’s intake and exhaust ports, and other elements related to engine tuning were independently developed by Mitsubishi."
