The unit has Optical Out, so I guess can connect la. But the STAR newspaper review says this....

A little investigation into the issue and we found the reason — apparently, the WD TV can’t decode MKV files with DTS or Dolby Digital encoded digital audio tracks.

Dont worry bro.... I will buy one unit first as test unit and will report back findings ASAP.

PS3 pon ada limitation jugak en shaari.. kena tukar format VOB and sebelum tu every mkv file yg lebih 4gb kena split.

err this one can not decode DTS, only got sound if you connect to AVR digitally.in the lowyat forum in Home entertainment section, look for Xtreamer, A.C.Ryan box which supports network streaming, rmvb, flv, all of the WDTV even BR iso. it can decode dts, AC3-plus and many more.me chepo sikit i bought from china similar to the above mentioned for RM 400....this one i copy bulat from my LYN posting

Currently in Lowyat plaza most shops selling for RM339. BUT read somewhere there will be a newer model WD TV Live coming soon...so after Raya will survey again.

The media players Ryan mention are in fact better, but it cost more and not easily available in Msia. I dont think A.C. Ryan is selling locally yet.

Aku dah banyak buat research pasal this "hard disk media player" nie. So far, yang aku tau only WDTV yg boleh update the firmware online from the western digital website. Brand lain semua chinese brand and susah nak cari firmware update. Unless if you can update the firmware online, it is NOT worth it to buy this stuff. Aku ada sebijik media player built in to the hard disk itself <Mcdia Player> but then aku takleh nak download the firmware which leads to problems playing files other than the format it has already support; xvid tak support, mkv tak support, rmv tak support. End up, the hard disk media player becomes a dinosaur and aku pakai buat nak simpan data je.

So far, kat Low Yatt WDTV price the cheapest I could find is RM379 @ Computerzone. At the same time, ada member aku pakai bende nie and format update is also supported through the firmware update - meaning that if there is a format that you cannot play, you can actually download the codec for the format. The only downside about WDTV, it does not play rmv (Real Media Video format) due to copyright issues. Yg lain lain semua takde masalah. Kalau takleh nak main the file, just update the firmware - gitu lah ckp member aku tuh.

If Whitey bleh dapat dealer price for this it would be real cool. Aku pong nak satu. Tangan tengah gatal nie nak gi angkat kat lowyatt nie pasal gaji pong dah masuk dan juga aku nyer Toshiba Regza RV500E dah jadi cam dinosaur kat rumah...

emm still thinking whether to buy this WD Multimedia Player or the HTiB which support limited format... However HTiB come with surround speaker and WD Multimedia Player need to buy speaker separately plus extra wiring... what do you think?

Bro,

when you say HTiB, are you talking about those HT system that comes with speakers, amps and player? If so, then it is a totally different thing altogether to compare it with the WDTV like comparing an apple with an orange. But if you asked me between getting a device which supports limited format vs more format, I will definitely go for the latter.

I used to connect my speakers to the TV using a normal audio in cable (and yes, I am not an AV Guru; AV Gurus out there care to advise). I wonder if this works with HDMI connection setting. My logic is as below:

Sound From HDMI input ---> TV sound ---> TV sound output to speakers.
terion
yupe thats how i connect it too... but those with high end HT systems can connect this way:

Sound from HDMI source --> HDMI In on the HT system --> HDMI out to the TV

also this way u get true 5.1 sound from the source

bro, if that is the case takyah beli WDTV...beli je RMVB player yg paling murah... RM199 kalau tak silap aku. Still bleh main .avi and other formats. Takyah susah2 nak cari format mkv pasal kalau pakai TV lama takleh pon nak reach 1080P...

Kalau nak dapat achieve 1080P, jom join sama ada clan LCD aku atau clan Plasma Infernus....the choice is yours, ada BRANN????:

- Toshiba Regza RV500E = RM3100
- Panasonic P42S10K = RM3200

i think its more worth it for falcon to get the WDTV... at least next time when he upgrade to LCD/Plasma, no need to get another player...

AC Ryan Playon HD available in carrefour (SG) for SGD 239.

best bang for bucks HD media player ATM is all these Realtek 1073 chip based players with streaming ability. decoding ability is chipset based (natively supported). so far review for this chip set seems excellent. different maker with customized firmware make the difference. so far A.C.Ryan and Xtreamer provide best support in term of firmware update for bugs and features.

the advantage over WDTV- network streaming, DTS, RMVB files

i got the noontek (china). they have the best support (among the chinese player).

I think I cannot wait and tahan anymore....

LCD HDTV ----> Bought
BlueRay 1080P downloaded movies ----> in hard disk
PS3??? ---> dun have
WDTV???----> dun have

so I am heading to low yatt ASAP and buying the WDTV since it is the cheapest option right now... BTW, there's a shop @ digital mall offered me PS3 Slim + 2 Ori Controller + 2 or 3 games (cant remember) for RM1620. I think its a good deal but i dun have funds yet....

[ot] err... dunno how to use. not sure how to setup ps3 to play media files. can meh? i plug in usb but it didnt recognise the files.

anyway i needed one for upstairs rooms. so i went and bought this WD TV just now. playing videos was easy. quite happy with purchase. it's also very small and portable so can bring it during travels. the box doesnt come with hdmi cable. only composite video cable.
terion
using USB of cause la, the ps3 only can play mp4, avi with divx, xvod format only... but its different if u use media server...it will convert whatever format to a streaming format that ps3 understands...

to setup very easy one la.. on the PS3 no need to set anything one... just install the software on ur pc/notebook then just set which folder u want it to share, then in the ps3 just look for the media server...

how to setup in detail: http://www.coderetard.com/2008/06/22/turn-...-with-tversity/

i found RM 389 at one shop in puchong (http://techhypermart.com/)
but i was walking in IOI when i saw it for RM 399... itchy so i just bought it at that price. i tot i saw an add for RM 369 too but i could not find it again.

lazy to go to lowyat for rm 3xx stuff.. maybe cheaper there (but jam, parking, distance.. tak payah la haha). also i sawmany type of media players (forgot name). mostly made in china that were cheaper RM 280 also got and also support rmvb but i didnt buy that cos.. just holding it feel like cheap plastic. even the buttons like flimsy. the WD one is more solid in the casing.

the model is DB200...NT4200 is 4200 taiwan dollars

i think DB200 slightly better coz it caters for RMVB n a few other formats that WD doesnt....not sure if this is sold here yet...dcspeed brought it back fr taiwan recently......

this just landed in my office, kworld Home media center

can play mpeg, avi, divx, xvid, rmvb, vob, dat, mp3, wma, jpg, bmp, txt

best thing is that i cost around rm1xx only...

only con is that output is only 720p and no hdmi, only component

i think nt4200 vs wdtv cant be directly compared. the earlier may support more formats but the later is more portable... from the pic the nt4200 looks like a dvd player sized thing. which means i cant bring it on my travels :)
