Full Version: "English" as the main Language in Lancerzone
Lancerzone Forums - Lancer Grand Touring Club Malaysia > Front Desk > Site Announcement

I would suggest that this debate be moved to the special discussion room and not here in the site announcement.....

We are MALAYSIANS, and we have different race and cultures....
FYI I am chinese......
If I meet a malay friend, I naturally will speak to him/her in malay/english...
If I meet a chinese friend, I naturally will speak in chinese...
If I meet an indian friend, I naturally will speak in malay/english...(because i don't know Tamil)
This is limited to a one-to-one verbal communication....

HOWEVER, This is not the case in lancerzone....
When you post a topic, reply to a post, it's meant to be read by EVERYONE...
this includes malay, chinese, indian etc...

What the forum is asking from you is just to kindly consider other forummers comprehension before posting something (slangs or short-terms) which is only comprehensible by your own race/culture...
I do reply to some of my chinese friends I know on this forum....did u catch me replying to them in chinese? rolleyes.gif

And please take note that the admins and moderators of this forum comprise of MALAYSIANS from all three major race/cultures in Malaysia and this announcement before it came to your monitor screen has already been discussed in detail by the admins and mods....

So guys n gals, please put this to rest.....
I thank you all very much

i guess nobody here ever said that BM will be 'diketepikan' or 'ditirikan'.
the Admin only said that English will be the main language in the forum except in Mamak Place.

jag, SDR can only be access by certain members only.. not all forum members.. besides SDR is inside LGTC section.

the only place i can think of is Suggestion Box

bro madon... it's not about freedom of speech and express of opinion here... it's about the language used.
terion
madon, no one is denying ur freedom of speech or express of opinion...

if we are doing that, none of ur posts would still be visible here... tongue.gif

we (admin/mods) value all opinions and critiques from all members and we strive to bring Lancerzone's standard up.

if anyone thinks that we (admin/mods) are not good enough or not doing our job properly, feel free to express it out, or even better volunteer to become a admin/mod and show us the way.

bro Koonx,

it is about just that, if you want to post in BM or English, its up to you as long as you do not offend others.. h3|| you can post in Mongolian if you want to - that my friend is freedom of speech and express of opinion which not only what our country lacks, and now so is the forum. This is my last say here, should anyone wants further debate/exchange of opinion, please PM me, I'd rather not "express" any more here... nuff said!

Bro Koonx,

At first u said this is about language used, and not freedom of speech and when I explained how the two is related you head somewhere else.. Do you understand idioms or "perumpamaan" in BM? Not that I want to converse in Mongolian!

Bro Terion,

I understand that you guys are doing a great job here since day one. I post most/all my postings in English but I just do not like the idea that it is a must and a rule. We are all Malaysians and BM is our language. Be proud of it. It does not matter if you are chinese, malay, indian, others... u MUST master Malaysian language!

bro madon, im not sure i understand

u want freedom of speech but in this case, the language that u use are mostly english and bm... which ARE the languages allowed.

so i can understand where u are coming from if the language that you are using is being ban but this is clearly not the case...

Could it just be that your perception of lancerzone as a global 'international' forum means we should accept any and all languages?

how would u feel if the posts are entirely in mandarin (like that even i myself cannot tahan liao)..

Come on guys nothing has changed, just post in simple and proper English/Malay and everything will be fine....
After all.....WHAT WILL A FORUM BE IF THERE ARE NO FORUMMERS?
SC999
1 club , 4 forums would be the best solution. 4 forums = 1 BM, 1 Chinese, 1 Tamil, 1 any languages.

anyone agree on above?

if yes, then voice out.

if not, let the people in LZ know what is the most preferred.

i said most preferred, so it gotta be just one language.
Jaguarah
errr....bro ter i noticed on our homepage at the left bottom there's an option for language...
but so far there's only english to choose........
do u think there is a way to put Malay, Chinese and Tamil as options there?
then when we want to post in.......

BM we choose malay version...
chinese we choose chinese version....
tamil we choose tamil version.....
of course if english choose english version........

Guys..

I remembered the day i join this forum. Most posts are in English. Over time , the Club and the Forum realised that most forumers started to use BM , short form and i also was having some problem to understand but we continue to allow and do not place any restriction.

The move to have an English Language as a medium for all thread except for mamak is to preserve the information contributed by the members for all to access and understand. We cant deny that English is an international language and it is the easy way to communicate to other people. We also teach our children to speak and write in English but as Malay we also continue to teach the culture and value of a Malay to our children.

What Lancerzone is doing is to standardise the language in all thread. We will continue to have fun and use our language in Mamak.

As a Malay. I am proud of the Bahasa Malaysia. I once even told a member here.. "if you dont understand Bahasa and but you are holding a Malaysian Passport .. you better migrate to some other place in the world". I am sorry to the rest for my remark.

Malay has received recognition from other part of the world as some University has started to teach Bahasa as one of the subject in their University. Even the legendary Hang Tuah once said " Takkan Melayu Hilang di dunia".

so guys.. please be supportive on this move. our previous PM, Tun Mahathir was criticised on a lot of things.. but today, we can stand tall and proud to be Malaysian. Hopefully, one day..we can also be proud to be part of this great Club and Forum.
princess
Can see the BM option but it doesn't work.

Sigh, I missed all the fun…..I just logged on.

May I know what the hoo-ha here is all about?

Of course everyone knows that Bahasa Malaysia is the official language of Malaysia……we even have the National Language Act confirming the supremacy of Bahasa Malaysia. Nobody can take this away.

But what about foreign members/guests accessing this forum? Do we expect them to learn Bahasa Malaysia so that they can understand the threads in this forum? Do we want to restrict this forum to local members only or do we want it to be accessible internationally?

To draw an analogy, when we have foreign clients or tourists in Malaysia, do we tell them, “Hello, please learn Bahasa Malaysia so that you can communicate with us….otherwise get lost…..you are not welcome in Malaysia?” Of course we don’t do this because we know not everyone speaks Bahasa Malaysia and we know that English is the global means of communications.

At the end of the day, we are just using the English language as a tool in this forum. I don’t think the intention is to bar members from using BM completely in this forum. Just my personal view.
Koonx
aiya... ngor saliva oso kering ady... how many kali wa lang need to ulang ourselves?? Simple english, BM and other languages (provided with translation) is acceptable in most of the threads. We only hope that those global threads to be written in English as we have global members and english is still without a doubt the common language. (although I must say Mandarin is catching up).
madon
Bro Koonx and Jaguarah...

Thanks for the mandarin lessons... Are you guys saying that "kamu tak faham apa benda yang saya tulis sekarang? Tak faham atau taknak faham??" And is it sooo effing bad that you speak in BM? It is only a language like you said. Why are you taking this so seriously?

I AM JUST SAYING THAT AS MALAYSIAN, WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF OUR LANGUAGE... ARE YOU PROUD OF OUR LANGUAGE???

Bro Terion,

I only say that things should remain as it is... post in either BM or English whether it is official or not... In which case both also must be to a certain level understandable to everyone. That is it. Nothing more, nothing less. Or alternatively let us vote, then everyone would be happy.

when i was in U.K, i told my course mate, i can speak Mandarin, english, BM and some chinese dialects, they were like jaw dropped and eye popped.

if i shame on BM, i would just tell them: NO, I DONT SPEAK BM.

the point here is, no one ever said that he/she is shame to be a Malaysian and looking down on BM. anyone did and i missed?

DOC .... it should be "KAWASAN LANCER ..... BAPAK LU SAPER?" biggrin.gif

On a more serious note, I think the usage of English on the forum, except on Mamak Place is a good step as I noticed some of the technical threads have been "polluted" lately with all the OTs and other stuff. Some of the OTs are written in local slang that might not be understood by some of the members here.
Long time ago we use to have useful discussions that sometimes can lead to heated but meaningful exchange that can benefits the members/forum users. Most of the discussion were conducted in English with a little bit of Malay here and there but the majority of the members that can't understand Malay can still follow and contribute to the discussions.

While nobody is prohibiting the use of Bahasa or any other languages in this forum, it is my opinions that the use of English is a good step and those members that have problems expressing their views or typing their questions in English are free to use Bahasa or any language that they are more comfortable with.

yo bro madon...

yes.. of course Im proud to be a Malaysian, and although my Bahasa Malaysia ("BM") in UPSR, PMR and SPM all F9... I still can understand and converse in simple BM.

Re my post earlier... we are just trying to make this forum more understandable on a global scale... that's all... and we are not that rigid after all... if 1 or 2 slangs in a sentence we can still take it.

WEIIIII what's the furore here guys...? Chill Chill....

I believe the mods are just trying to streamline the use of language in this forum, without limiting the usage of our Bahasa Malayu. A few words of Malay in an english sentence will not make people not understand what is being expressed. I understand where the mods/admins are coming from. Of late I noticed some forumers are expressing their view and opinions in heavy Malay slang plus lots of short forms that can make those who are unfamiliar with the language pening. Whilst it's not wrong to do so, but we are limiting the understanding from the mass audience that we have in this forum. Very true, those who don't understand can always ask. And we can translate the whole thing for the benefit of others....but why do we have to do the same thing twice whilst we can only do it once?

Please don't get me wrong, I am not belittling Bahasa Melayu. I'm proud of who I am and I am proud of my mother tongue. I believe I share this with all of us here. As the saying goes, bahasa menunjukkan bangsa. If you notice, most of my postings are rojak language. And I dont intend to change the way I post.

So guys, don't take this too seriously. Nobody is belittling our beloved Bahasa Melayu. And we will not change to be other people just by speaking in English. Chill.... smile.gif

I don't see how a Malaysian forum being run in English has anything to do with patriotism or loss of national identity. Typing here in English doesn't make me any less of a Japanese nor do I feel insulted when I visit Japanese sites conducted in English.

Perhaps it's a simple matter of individuals here having gotten used to a certain style (due to the style's extensive usage over a period of time) and cannot or refuse to adapt to this change proposed (enforced?) by this forum's owners. I suppose it's like changing a habit, which can be pretty hard...

Dear Lancerians,

We would appreciate it if members can post in English for the official threads. Most of us understand Bahasa Malaysia. But this forum is accessible worldwide and members/guests from other countries may not understand Bahasa Malaysia.

As long as members can post in simple English and get the message across, this would be good enough. Members are allowed to add-in a few words/phrases in other languages either to 'compliment' or to make the post more 'lively'.

We are not restricting members from using Bahasa Malaysia entirely but for topics that aren't in Mamak Place, English is still a preferred language.

After all, this forum is about car and friendship.

Thank you for your cooperation. Let’s work together to make Lancerzone an internationally acclaimed car forum.

How anyone can totally miss the point forwarded by Princess is beyond me......its so politely written, well balanced and without any prejudice to anyone. We should all give our full support towards this goal.

Almost everyone here is guilty of rojak language used be it Chinese, Malay or even a sprinkling of Tamil....me included...so this has come as a timely reminder.

Thank you.

Umm...Jag, Ryan's Hokkein is Southern...can u include Northern Hokkein as well? It goes like this:

"Lancer Oui - Loo Eh Lau Pek See Ha Mee Langg Leh?"...wakakakakaka...

See, even Hokkein has at least 2 different versions...imagine what we will go through trying to decipher the slangs and loghats used if the Forum becomes a free-for-all. It cannot be denied that English is internationally understood. We should be proud that we as Malaysians are multi-lingual with our main language being BM and English.

Why don't we look at the announcement to use English as the main language from this point of view :

Because we Malaysians are multi-lingual, we shall opt to use English as the main language, in order for us to be able to converse with the rest of the world, to share out information and to exchange intelligence with the WWW (World Wide Web, or Whole Wide World...as you like...smile.gif) because WE CAN. smile.gif geek.gif

Now, let us be proud, that albeit our national language is Bahasa Malaysia, our command of English is as strong as well. good.gif
