Just wondering what would you do in these 2 scenarios:

1) stones are being thrown up from vehicle in front or lorry

2) medium sized object that was thrown up and flew towards your car....(say size of shoe)...

would you slow down/accelerate/swerve, etc? what if you didnt have room to swerve?
onslaught
usually i just let the stone come down why slowing down...if can overtake i will do that...if not just take it as it is...swerve when it is safe la...
my previous experience:
1) i once hit a flying bird which fly direct to me car at 100++KM/H...no time to slow or to swerve...the bird didn't make it...and i'm lucky
the windscreen still intact.

2) while travelling in excess speed of 200KM/H at the highway...i overtake a trailer and didn't aware there was a stone as big as the fist been thrown out of the back of the trailer and hit my windscreen...at that time i just shove away the stone...stopped at the next R&R to see the damage...nothing can be seen with naked eyes...not even stone chip...maybe the aerodynamics helped to reduce the impact...lalalala...

3) during monsoon season at east cost region, the road is in bad condition...got potholes everywhere and the road is full of stone debris which is been thrown at my car...if you frequent traveller in east coast region like me that's why you can see some car stop at the road side cleaning their shattered windscreen...the little stone flying around is smashing the windscreen to bits...this time i can not slowdown or swerve to avoid...sigh...just endure the pains...lol...

p/s: i put a protection tint at the front windscreen...and so far it works for me...just my 2 cent

its a good question which i have never thought off.

i have never been in this situation before. so if i see something flying towards me, i think i will try to brake and swerve away but i will still depends if there are cars behind , right and left.. am more worried if my drastic movement will cause panic to them and they will loose control.

but in my experience ,managed to swerved few time on Hugh object on the road such as wood, bricks, human ( no joking , guy lying on road after an accident at night), dead animals..

basically i am a slow driver.. so should not be a problem, i guess.. hehe

Spontaneously i will swerve....

Freddie has very rich experience in this kind of scenario... smile.gif

On, you put the protection tint inside or outside? that's a good idea i guess. at least the windscreen won't break into pieces instantly...touch wood kena stone :)

mine installed inside the car...if one double layer inside out side can do that too...

last nite @ Bukit Jalil - Puchong Bypass highway, human body was being thrown up from small lorry and was rolled over by new camry in front of me.
Luckily i already slowed down when saw that lorry hard braking to avoid that victim.

donno, i didnt dare to stop, very scary, i saw the tangan putus and tercampak to the road side, and i saw the body ran over under that Camry. that lorry also not stop, only that Camry stopped.
i think either that man suicide (bcos it happend under jejantas) or he drunk and cross the road without thinking.( he look messy like homeless/drug addict at lorong2 in KL)
sure already dead bcos the body not moving, also like no wound and no blood look like already dead before that incident.

Ottobot, thats an interesting twist to this topic..... lucky you didnt hit the body.

I ask as frequent highway users will know that following behind/beside another vehicle, all kinds of stuff can come up at you. Its rare but it does happen.

just yesterday an object the size of a shoe flew up at my car (think it was a broken side mirror or something) - hardly got any time to react - shocked me.... luckily no major damage.
LancerInspired
swerving is usually the reaction but then you have split second look to the mirror to ensure its safe to swerve, otherwise it could have hit into fast approaching oncoming car from behind.

Wah otobott, that place I also pass by frequently, scary the way you describe it

The way I drive, there's no safe way for me to avoid anything. Just earlier this week I was traveling north on NSE and saw some thick smoke in front. My speed was around 140-160 and suddenly a tanker appeared in the thick smoke. I immediately swerve to another lane to avoid hitting the tanker. The sudden weight shift of my car almost caused me to lose control at that speed but I managed to correct it back. Turned out it was just a very polluting lorry emiting thick black smoke everywhere.

Always put both hands on the steering wheel and look into rear view mirror every 3 seconds or so. Get your seating position right. It does help in emergency.

Jaguarah
I'll slow down....
anything that has possibility of sending something flying towards my ride i wouldn't want to get too near to...
if still unavoidable i'll check the rear view mirror if no car i'll swerve biggrin.gif
