The IP4 hype is so great it makes the Desire discussion turned gloomy. This is to boost it up a lil' bit. To those who are waiting for the desire HD, I found this discussion online on the HTC Desire Forum:

HD or no HD?

I've been following the posts on this forum and feel that I should be part of this community since I'm going to get my Desire soon. I've been contemplating on jumping on board the android bandwagon and the Desire ticks the correct boxes for me. Now with the arrival of Desire HD, the question is; Should I spend my hard earned cash to buy the Desire or patiently wait for the DHD?
There are a few issues here:
1. Will I be able to get all the upgrades and improvements in DHD for the Desire?
2. Minus the screen size, which screen is better?
3. Future update... can the Desire it go beyond Froyo?
Help me decide or just humor me.

Humor you? Ok.
A guy walks into a bar, and ...
In all seriousness, the "old" Desire will most likely still get updates as it'll still be one of the most powerful smartphones even after the HD hits the stores. HTC is already talking about expanding the HD's online functionality to the old model.
It's your money, so your choice really. We know the Desire's common faults, but the HD will probably have it's own issues to discover. Then again, you might regret buying the old one because the HD will always have the better camera and most likely have a bigger battery and such.
EDIT : apparently the HD has a smaller battery (1230mAh as opposed to the 1400mAh unit found in the old model). Then again, it might be more energy-efficient. Then again, it uses the same CPU as the old phone, and whenever the CPU kicks in it drains the battery pretty quickly. Still, 1230mAh should get you through the day once it's been calibrated and such.

I'll let you decide for yourself:
HTC Desire HD vs HTC Desire (according to the official website):
1. More ROM (1.5GB vs 512MB), but the point is almost moot since any custom ROM supports A2SD+, but internal memory is definitely faster, but a Class-6 card renders the argument invalid too.
2. Bigger screen. A very valid argument here, but controversial. But PPI is going to suffer since the resolution stays the same. The Desire's (estimated) PPI is 252, while the Desire HD will clock in at 217. Compare this to a 326 PPI from an iPhone 4. This means you have a bigger screen in terms of size, but the picture grain suffers. But, of course, I am all for a bigger screen size. Just keep in mind the display might not look as gorgeous...
3. More RAM. This, IMO, is totally unimportant. Android manages RAM and multi-tasking in a different way from Windows, so the benefit of more RAM is completely arguable. Go figure for 192MB of RAM...
4. 8MP camera. Well... the truth is, a Nokia N92 nearly beat my SE K850i in a camera shoot-out (both were 5MP cam-phones). The difference was that the Nokia had a Carl Zeiss lense, and the SE comes with the Sony Cyber-shot program. So... what I'm saying is that a good camera needs good software and a good lense. Sadly, HTC has incorporated neither. 8MP will definitely be better than 5mp but it is kinda hard to notice the difference on the Desire's screen (and also on most desktop computers). Also HD has 2 LED flashes... For what, I have no idea.
5. Smaller battery. This one is a killer for me. 1230mAH on the HD vs 1400mAH on the vanilla. As we all know, the Desire has a killer battery life. Also, HTC ramped up the estimated talk-time, but I don't buy a smartphone for just talking... It is possible, however, that due to a processor update, the power consumption will be lowered, but I'm not hoping for anything...
6. Possibly better processor. The Snapdragon has gone through updates, and Engadget has speculated that the newer Snapdragon in the Desire HD might be more optimized for 3D gaming and power consumption.
7. Sensor buttons vs Physical buttons.
That's about it from me... But if I were you, I'd wait for the Desire HD to come out before buying anything. The prices will drop, and you might like the extra real-estate in the HD. I was kinda p*ssed when the HD came out, but after going through the specs-sheet, I realize that it wasn't too impressive and calmed the heck down
