Volkswagen want to CKD their models but not under Proton name. They want to control 100% not by sharing.
They still with their plan as they already invested million of dollars long b4 they terminate the deal. There is no such news that when they terminate deal wt Proton mean that they also give up CKD VW plan. VW make it clear that they didnt need Proton to penetrate ASEAN market.

That's interesting Khus. But won't it make it cheaper for VW to sell their products via sharing with Proton? Just like what Mitsu, Kia and a few other makes did. Anyway, I believe there must be some other confidential reasons why the deal is off.
khusyairi
I think it's depend on management. But VW management mentality is they want to buy a company instead of share technology. That's what they do in europe. Under this management policy, they own Audi, Bentley Motors, Bugatti Automobiles, Lamborghini, SEAT, Škoda Auto & a lot more.
Since early negotiation wt Proton, VW want to buy Proton share. They want to be major shareholder. But Khazanah/ govt not allowed it due few reasons as Proton is national assets.

U r rite about VW can sell cheaper via sharing wt proton. That's short term gain.
But at the same time they didnt want Proton get the technology which can be use to enhance Proton own cars.
In long term, I think VW management see that they will lost something. As car manufacturer company, they want to monopoly the market as they know they have one of the best line of products in the world.

Why Japanese & any other Asia countries willing to share technology?
It's becoz "Asia for Asia" policy that been use by Asian leaders. Here in Malaysia, we often heard about "Dasar Pandang Ke Timur". More or less same concept.
They came with this beautiful idea as Asian countries were lack in technology & behind of time in term of development than europe & USA few decades ago.
Until now 2010, Japanese govt still sponsor thousand Malaysian students to study in their country where they can learn and use their knowledge for Asian development. While in the other hand, Msian govt pay with their own money (scholarship) to send student in Germany.

I am wondering is Proton 3rd parties tie up / partnering like this an indication of FDI into this country?
khusyairi
As indication of FDI; yes.
But Proton partnering wt VW, it wont be reported in the account as it not existed.

I don't think so the proton people shares your view. I believe what they had in mind was to have not only profit sharing, but knowledge and technology sharing as well. But unfortunately, the VW executives were not in the same page (I think). Probably they wanted to have a bigger say on the decision making. But of course being the host, we can't allow them to do that. It's like you're accepting a guest in your house. Of course they have to abide by the rules and regulations. I don't think you'll like it when your guest wonder freely in your house and decides what you must eat and when you go to the toilet right?
alxand_mitsubishi
well yes they wanna share tech, but on 1 hand being a national asset so they r reluctant to give bigger share to VW... coz with no big share is like pump ur money but no control, i hope i'm wrong but over the years this is wat the G r doing...
shah25
Of course that is what the G is doing all this while. You said it, Proton is a national asset. It's the same analogy I gave about the guest in your house. Or maybe I change to this, you rent a room in your house to a perfect stranger. And the room rate is 40-50% of the monthly instalments to the bank. But in the end, that stranger wants total control of everything. No sane lanlord will allow that to happen right.

on one hand, given the consolidation of car manufacturers globally - where even the big boys find it tough to compete is it a real option to remain independent for long? so far only renault and mitsubishi have been working with Proton.... they also have had their own troubles....

VW was never going to go down that route of sharing (that was made very clear from previous discussions and how they do biz globally) so perhaps it was a lost cause and maybe the focus should have been on other potential partners who are?
shah25
Personally, I am also quite frustrated this deal didn't go through. I was hoping that with this so called JV, the quality of Proton's products and services would improve. And also looking forward for a cheaper passat cc tongue.gif. Khazanah and all other shareholders must have something else in mind. People in Khazanah are not stupid people, it's just that sometimes they make not so clever decisions. They just let opportunity slipped away. I really hope they will manage to find another reputable industry player to partner them.
alxand_mitsubishi
if this JV thru, then good news, beside possible better quality, cras r more affordable with latest technology as being seen in skoda...
the latest trend in car industry is to join a group, share cost and sahre everything...

few points we can look into, by missing this chance, who else can they fall to? not much choices...

Glad that this has put off by VW, glad that Proton will continue to be left behind in auto industry in term of design, tech, knowledge and R&D too...... banana.gif banana.gif banana.gif banana.gif

I'm 100% glad the deal is off. BTW. The so called CKD model by VW would be of its normal mark of engine. One can forget the Gti series engine. That wouldn't happen for now. Just like the Bimmer.
